Summit Bound: Regional Training Takes Shape at the Baguio Athletic Bowl

A new era for Philippine sports is rising in the Summer Capital. PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong led the inspection of the ongoing Baguio Athletic Bowl rehabilitation, a major project that aims to transform the city into a Regional Training Center (RTC).

The current approach to building RTCs emphasizes strong support from the local government and the Philippine Sports Commission, active involvement from National Sports Associations, and the development of the region’s local athletic talent. During the inspection, PSC Commissioners Walter Torres and Edward Hayco, local sports officials, and NSA leaders joined the walkthrough to assess how the facility can support training programs. These included Philippine Football Federation President John Gutierrez, World Archery Philippines President Bing Reaport with Secretary General Macky Santos, and Philippine Aquatics Inc. Secretary General Eric Buhain. Their presence reflects shared confidence in Baguio’s high altitude environment as an ideal setting for athlete development.

The inspection covered the entire complex, including the track oval, football pitch, swimming pool, grandstand, and athletes’ residence. Chairman Gregorio praised the venue’s large area and planned improvements, noting its potential to guide athletes from grassroots training to gold medal success.

With completion targeted by May 2026, the Baguio Athletic Bowl is more than a renovation. It is a long term investment in Filipino athletes that strengthens both grassroots development and elite sports preparation.
